A capacitor has air as dielectric medium and two conducting plates of area 12 cm212 \mathrm{~cm}^212 cm2 and they are 0.6 cm0.6 \mathrm{~cm}0.6 cm apart. When a slab of dielectric having area 12 cm212 \mathrm{~cm}^212 cm2 and 0.6 cm0.6 \mathrm{~cm}0.6 cm thickness is inserted between the plates, one of the conducting plates has to be moved by 0.2 cm0.2 \mathrm{~cm}0.2 cm to keep the capacitance same as in previous case. The dielectric constant of the slab is : (Given ϵ0=8.834×10−12 F/m\epsilon_0=8.834 \times 10^{-12} \mathrm{~F} / \mathrm{m}ϵ0=8.834×10−12 F/m)

Correct answer: A

  1. Initial capacitance with air

For a parallel plate capacitor, C0=ε0AdC_0=\frac{\varepsilon_0 A}{d}C0=dε0A

Given:

  • Plate area: A=12 cm2A=12\,\text{cm}^2A=12cm2
  • Initial separation: d=0.6 cmd=0.6\,\text{cm}d=0.6cm

So initially, C0=ε0A0.6C_0=\frac{\varepsilon_0 A}{0.6}C0=0.6ε0A

(We do not need to convert units since only ratios are involved.)

  1. After inserting dielectric slab

The dielectric slab has:

  • area equal to plate area,
  • thickness 0.6 cm0.6\,\text{cm}0.6cm, so it completely fills the space between the plates if the plate separation remains 0.6 cm0.6\,\text{cm}0.6cm.

But to keep the capacitance same as before, one plate is moved by 0.2 cm0.2\,\text{cm}0.2cm.

Hence new plate separation becomes d′=0.6+0.2=0.8 cmd'=0.6+0.2=0.8\,\text{cm}d′=0.6+0.2=0.8cm

Now the arrangement consists of:

  • dielectric slab of thickness 0.6 cm0.6\,\text{cm}0.6cm and dielectric constant KKK,
  • air gap of thickness 0.2 cm0.2\,\text{cm}0.2cm.

These act like capacitors in series.

The effective capacitance is C=ε0A0.6K+0.2C=\frac{\varepsilon_0 A}{\frac{0.6}{K}+0.2}C=K0.6+0.2ε0A

  1. Condition: capacitance remains same

Given that new capacitance equals old capacitance: ε0A0.6K+0.2=ε0A0.6\frac{\varepsilon_0 A}{\frac{0.6}{K}+0.2}=\frac{\varepsilon_0 A}{0.6}K0.6+0.2ε0A=0.6ε0A

Cancel ε0A\varepsilon_0 Aε0A from both sides: 10.6K+0.2=10.6\frac{1}{\frac{0.6}{K}+0.2}=\frac{1}{0.6}K0.6+0.21=0.61

So, 0.6K+0.2=0.6\frac{0.6}{K}+0.2=0.6K0.6+0.2=0.6

0.6K=0.4\frac{0.6}{K}=0.4K0.6=0.4

K=0.60.4=1.5K=\frac{0.6}{0.4}=1.5K=0.40.6=1.5

  1. Checking options
  • A: 1.501.501.50 ✅
  • B: 0.660.660.66 ❌
  • C: 1.331.331.33 ❌
  • D: 111 ❌

Thus the correct answer is: 1.50\boxed{1.50}1.50
