JEE MainPhysicsCapacitorMCQ+4 / −1
Two identical thin metal plates has charge q1q_{1}q1 and q2q_{2}q2 respectively such that q1>q2q_{1}>q_{2}q1>q2. The plates were brought close to each other to form a parallel plate capacitor of capacitance C. The potential difference between them is :
  1. A
    (q1+q2)C\frac{\left(q_{1}+q_{2}\right)}{C}C(q1+q2)
  2. B
    (q1−q2)C\frac{\left(q_{1}-q_{2}\right)}{C}C(q1−q2)
  3. C
    (q1−q2)2C\frac{\left(q_{1}-q_{2}\right)}{2 C}2C(q1−q2)
  4. D
    2(q1−q2)C\frac{2\left(q_{1}-q_{2}\right)}{C}C2(q1−q2)

Correct answer: C

  1. Let the final charges on the facing plates be found using symmetry

When two identical metal plates are brought close to form a capacitor, charge redistributes.

Let the charges appearing on the outer surfaces be xxx and yyy, and the charges on the inner facing surfaces be +Q+Q+Q and −Q-Q−Q respectively.

Since the plates are identical and placed symmetrically, the outer surfaces must have equal charge density, so x=y.x=y.x=y.

Now apply charge conservation to each plate:

  • Left plate total charge: x+Q=q1x+Q=q_1x+Q=q1
  • Right plate total charge: y−Q=q2y-Q=q_2y−Q=q2

Since x=yx=yx=y, subtract the second equation from the first: (x+Q)−(x−Q)=q1−q2(x+Q)-(x-Q)=q_1-q_2(x+Q)−(x−Q)=q1−q2 2Q=q1−q22Q=q_1-q_22Q=q1−q2 Q=q1−q22Q=\frac{q_1-q_2}{2}Q=2q1−q2

So the capacitor effectively has charge magnitude Q=q1−q22.Q=\frac{q_1-q_2}{2}.Q=2q1−q2.

  1. Use the capacitor relation

For a capacitor, V=QCV=\frac{Q}{C}V=CQ where QQQ is the magnitude of charge on either plate of the capacitor.

Thus, V=1C⋅q1−q22V=\frac{1}{C}\cdot \frac{q_1-q_2}{2}V=C1⋅2q1−q2 V=q1−q22CV=\frac{q_1-q_2}{2C}V=2Cq1−q2

  1. Check the options

The obtained expression is q1−q22C\frac{q_1-q_2}{2C}2Cq1−q2 which matches Option C.

  1. Comparison with stored correct answer

Stored correct answer: C

Our derived answer: C

They agree.
