A parallel plate capacitor filled with a medium of dielectric constant 10, is connected across a battery and is charged. The dielectric slab is replaced by another slab of dielectric constant 15. Then the energy of capacitor will :
  1. A
    increase by 50%
  2. B
    decrease by 15%
  3. C
    increase by 25%
  4. D

Correct answer: A

  1. Capacitor connected to a battery
Since the capacitor remains connected across a battery, the voltage VVV remains constant.

  2. Energy of a capacitor at constant voltage
The energy stored is U=12CV2U = \frac{1}{2}CV^2U=21CV2 So, when VVV is constant, U∝CU \propto CU∝C

  3. Capacitance with dielectric
For a parallel plate capacitor fully filled with dielectric constant KKK, C=KC0C = K C_0C=KC0 where C0C_0C0 is the capacitance without dielectric.

  4. Initial and final capacitances
    Initially, dielectric constant is K1=10K_1 = 10K1=10: C1=10C0C_1 = 10C_0C1=10C0 Finally, dielectric constant is K2=15K_2 = 15K2=15: C2=15C0C_2 = 15C_0C2=15C0

  5. Compare energies
    Since U∝CU \propto CU∝C, U2U1=C2C1=1510=1.5\frac{U_2}{U_1} = \frac{C_2}{C_1} = \frac{15}{10} = 1.5U1U2=C1C2=1015=1.5

Thus, U2=1.5U1U_2 = 1.5U_1U2=1.5U1 So the energy increases by 50%50\%50%

  6. Check options

    • A: increase by 50%50\%50% ✅
    • B: decrease by 15%15\%15% ❌
    • C: increase by 25%25\%25% ❌
    • D: increase by 33%33\%33% ❌

Therefore, the correct answer is A.
