A sheet of aluminium foil of negligible thickness is introduced between the plates of a capacitor. The capacitance of the capacitor
  1. A
    decreases
  2. B
    remains unchanged
  3. C
    becomes infinite
  4. D
    increases

Correct answer: B

  1. Idea of the situation

    A parallel plate capacitor has capacitance C=ε0AdC = \frac{\varepsilon_0 A}{d}C=dε0A where:

    • AAA = plate area
    • ddd = separation between plates

We insert a sheet of aluminium foil of negligible thickness between the plates.

  2. What does aluminium do?

Aluminium is a conductor. When a conducting sheet is inserted between the plates, the electric field inside the conductor becomes zero, and the arrangement behaves like two capacitors in series.

  3. Effect of negligible thickness

Suppose the conducting foil has thickness ttt.

Then the effective gap across which electric field exists becomes: d−td - td−t and the new capacitance is C′=ε0Ad−tC' = \frac{\varepsilon_0 A}{d-t}C′=d−tε0A

    Since the foil thickness is negligible, we take t≈0t \approx 0t≈0 Hence, C′=ε0Ad=CC' = \frac{\varepsilon_0 A}{d} = CC′=dε0A=C

  4. Conclusion

    Therefore, the capacitance remains unchanged.

  5. Checking options

    • A: decreases — Incorrect
    • B: remains unchanged — Correct
    • C: becomes infinite — Incorrect
    • D: increases — Incorrect

Therefore, the correct answer is B.
