The angular momentum for the electron in Bohr's orbit is L. If the electron is assumed to revolve in second orbit of hydrogen atom, then the change in angular momentum will be
  1. A
    L
  2. B
    L2\frac{L}{2}2L
  3. C
    zero
  4. D
    2 L

Correct answer: A

  1. In Bohr's model, the angular momentum of an electron in the nthn^{\text{th}}nth orbit is quantized as

Ln=nh2π=nℏL_n = n\frac{h}{2\pi} = n\hbarLn=n2πh=nℏ

  1. Let the angular momentum in the first orbit be given as LLL.

So,

L1=ℏ=LL_1 = \hbar = LL1=ℏ=L

  1. For the second orbit (n=2n=2n=2), the angular momentum is

L2=2ℏ=2LL_2 = 2\hbar = 2LL2=2ℏ=2L

  1. Hence, the change in angular momentum in going from the first orbit to the second orbit is

ΔL=L2−L1=2L−L=L\Delta L = L_2 - L_1 = 2L - L = LΔL=L2−L1=2L−L=L

  1. Therefore, the correct option is:

A: L\boxed{\text{A: } L}A: L
