Correct answer: 16

  1. We need electrons in all completely filled subshells with:

    • principal quantum number n=4n=4n=4
    • spin quantum number s=+12s=+\frac{1}{2}s=+21
  2. For n=4n=4n=4, the possible subshells are: 4s,  4p,  4d,  4f4s,\;4p,\;4d,\;4f4s,4p,4d,4f because for a given nnn, l=0,1,2,3l=0,1,2,3l=0,1,2,3.

  3. A completely filled subshell contains the maximum allowed electrons:

    • sss subshell: 222 electrons
    • ppp subshell: 666 electrons
    • ddd subshell: 101010 electrons
    • fff subshell: 141414 electrons
  4. But the question asks only for electrons with spin quantum number s=+12s=+\frac{1}{2}s=+21 In a completely filled subshell, half the electrons have spin +12+\frac{1}{2}+21 and half have spin −12-\frac{1}{2}−21.

  5. Therefore, number of electrons with spin +12+\frac{1}{2}+21 in each filled subshell:

    • 4s4s4s: 22=1\frac{2}{2}=122=1
    • 4p4p4p: 62=3\frac{6}{2}=326=3
    • 4d4d4d: 102=5\frac{10}{2}=5210=5
    • 4f4f4f: 142=7\frac{14}{2}=7214=7
  6. Total number of such electrons: 1+3+5+7=161+3+5+7=161+3+5+7=16

  7. Hence, the required number of electrons is: 16\boxed{16}16

  8. Comparison with stored correct answer:

    • Stored correct answer = 161616
    • Derived answer = 161616
    • They match.
