Given below are two statements : Statement (I) : The orbitals having same energy are called as degenerate orbitals. Statement (II) : In hydrogen atom, 3p and 3d orbitals are not degenerate orbitals. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. A
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  2. B
Statement I is false but Statement II is true
  3. C
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  4. D
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
View written solutionFree

Correct answer: A

  1. Evaluate Statement (I)

Degenerate orbitals are defined as orbitals having the same energy.

    Therefore, Statement (I) is true.

  2. Evaluate Statement (II)

In a hydrogen atom, the energy of an orbital depends only on the principal quantum number nnn, not on the azimuthal quantum number lll.

Hence, all orbitals with the same value of nnn are degenerate.

For n=3n=3n=3, the orbitals are: 3s, 3p, 3d3s,\,3p,\,3d3s,3p,3d and all of them have the same energy in hydrogen atom.

Therefore, 3p3p3p and 3d3d3d are degenerate in hydrogen atom.

So Statement (II) which says they are not degenerate is false.

  3. Choose the correct option

    • Statement (I): True
    • Statement (II): False

Hence, the correct option is: A\boxed{\text{A}}A

  4. Comparison with stored correct answer

    Stored correct answer = A

    My derived answer = A

So, the derived answer agrees with the stored correct answer.
