  1. For a hydrogen atom, when an electron starts from an excited level nnn and ultimately reaches the ground state, it can emit photons corresponding to all possible transitions between the available energy levels.

  2. The maximum number of distinct emission lines possible from level nnn is: N=n(n−1)2N = \frac{n(n-1)}{2}N=2n(n−1)​ This counts all possible downward transitions among the levels 1,2,3,…,n1,2,3,\dots,n1,2,3,…,n.

  3. Here, the electron starts from n=5n=5n=5. So, N=5(5−1)2=5⋅42=10N = \frac{5(5-1)}{2} = \frac{5\cdot 4}{2} = 10N=25(5−1)​=25⋅4​=10
