JEE MainChemistrySome Basic Concepts of ChemistryMCQ+4 / −1
An organic compound is estimated through Duma's method and was found to evolve 6 moles of CO2CO_2CO2. 4 moles of H2OH_2OH2O and 1 mole of nitrogen gas. The formula of the compound is :
  1. A
    C6H8NC_6H_8NC6H8N
  2. B
    C6H8N2C_6H_8N_2C6H8N2
  3. C
    C12H8NC_{12}H_8NC12H8N
  4. D
    C12H8N2C_{12}H_8N_2C12H8N2

Correct answer: B

  1. Use combustion/Dumas data to infer the atom ratio

Let the organic compound have formula CxHyNzC_xH_yN_zCxHyNz.

    On complete combustion:

    • xxx carbon atoms give xxx moles of CO2CO_2CO2
    • yyy hydrogen atoms give y2\dfrac{y}{2}2y moles of H2OH_2OH2O
    • zzz nitrogen atoms give z2\dfrac{z}{2}2z moles of N2N_2N2

We are given that the compound evolves:

    • 666 moles of CO2CO_2CO2
    • 444 moles of H2OH_2OH2O
    • 111 mole of N2N_2N2
  2. Find number of C, H, and N atoms

    From CO2CO_2CO2: x=6x=6x=6

    From H2OH_2OH2O: y2=4⇒y=8\frac{y}{2}=4 \Rightarrow y=82y=4⇒y=8

    From N2N_2N2: z2=1⇒z=2\frac{z}{2}=1 \Rightarrow z=22z=1⇒z=2

  3. Write the molecular formula

    Therefore, the formula is: C6H8N2C_6H_8N_2C6H8N2

  4. Check options

    • A: C6H8NC_6H_8NC6H8N ❌ (would give only 12\tfrac{1}{2}21 mole N2N_2N2)
    • B: C6H8N2C_6H_8N_2C6H8N2 ✅
    • C: C12H8NC_{12}H_8NC12H8N ❌ (would give 121212 moles CO2CO_2CO2)
    • D: C12H8N2C_{12}H_8N_2C12H8N2 ❌ (would give 121212 moles CO2CO_2CO2)

Hence the correct option is B.
