A sample of NaClO3NaCl{O_3}NaClO3 is converted by heat to NaClNaClNaCl with a loss of 0.16g0.16g0.16g of oxygen. The residue is dissolved in water and precipitated as AgCl.AgCl.AgCl. The mass of AgClAgClAgCl(in ggg) obtained will be : (Given : Molar mass of AgCl=143.5gmol−1AgCl=143.5gmo{l^{ - 1}}AgCl=143.5gmol−1)

Correct answer: C

  1. Write the decomposition reaction

On heating, sodium chlorate decomposes to sodium chloride and oxygen:

2NaClO3→2NaCl+3O22NaClO_3 \rightarrow 2NaCl + 3O_22NaClO3→2NaCl+3O2

  1. Find moles of oxygen lost

Given mass of oxygen lost = 0.16 g0.16\,g0.16g

Since oxygen is released as O2O_2O2,

n(O2)=0.1632=0.005 moln(O_2)=\frac{0.16}{32}=0.005\,moln(O2)=320.16=0.005mol

  1. Use stoichiometry to find moles of NaClNaClNaCl formed

From the reaction,

3 mol  O2 are formed with 2 mol  NaCl3\,mol\; O_2 \text{ are formed with } 2\,mol\; NaCl3molO2 are formed with 2molNaCl

So,

n(NaCl)=23×0.005=0.00333 moln(NaCl)=\frac{2}{3}\times 0.005=0.00333\,moln(NaCl)=32×0.005=0.00333mol

  1. Relate NaClNaClNaCl to AgClAgClAgCl formed

When the residue is dissolved and treated with silver ion:

NaCl+AgNO3→AgCl↓+NaNO3NaCl + AgNO_3 \rightarrow AgCl \downarrow + NaNO_3NaCl+AgNO3→AgCl↓+NaNO3

Thus,

n(AgCl)=n(NaCl)=0.00333 moln(AgCl)=n(NaCl)=0.00333\,moln(AgCl)=n(NaCl)=0.00333mol

  1. Calculate mass of AgClAgClAgCl

Given molar mass of AgCl=143.5 g mol−1AgCl = 143.5\,g\,mol^{-1}AgCl=143.5gmol−1

m(AgCl)=0.00333×143.5m(AgCl)=0.00333\times 143.5m(AgCl)=0.00333×143.5

m(AgCl)≈0.478 gm(AgCl)\approx 0.478\,gm(AgCl)≈0.478g

So the mass of AgClAgClAgCl obtained is approximately

0.48 g\boxed{0.48\,g}0.48g

  1. Option check
  • A: 0.350.350.35 ❌
  • B: 0.410.410.41 ❌
  • C: 0.480.480.48 ✅
  • D: 0.540.540.54 ❌

Therefore, the correct option is C.
