Match List - I with List - II.

List - I List - II
(A) Solution of chloroform and acetone (I) Minimum boiling azeotrope
(B) Solution of ethanol and water (II) Dimerizes
(C) Solution of benzene and toluene (III) Maximum boiling azeotrope
(D) Solution of acetic acid in benzene (IV) ΔVmix = 0

Choose the correct answer from the options given below :

  1. A
    (A)-(III), (B)-(I), (C)-(IV), (D)-(II)
  2. B
    (A)-(III), (B)-(IV), (C)-(I), (D)-(II)
  3. C
    (A)-(II), (B)-(I), (C)-(IV), (D)-(III)
  4. D
    (A)-(II), (B)-(IV), (C)-(I), (D)-(III)

Correct answer: A

  1. Identify the behavior of each solution

(A) Solution of chloroform and acetone

Chloroform and acetone show strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding between CHCl3and(CH3)2CO\text{CHCl}_3 \quad \text{and} \quad (CH_3)_2COCHCl3and(CH3)2CO This causes negative deviation from Raoult’s law.

Negative deviation leads to a maximum boiling azeotrope.

So, (A)→(III)(A) \to (III)(A)→(III)

(B) Solution of ethanol and water

Ethanol and water form a solution that shows positive deviation from Raoult’s law because mixing disrupts the strong hydrogen-bonding network present in pure water and pure ethanol.

Positive deviation leads to a minimum boiling azeotrope.

So, (B)→(I)(B) \to (I)(B)→(I)

(C) Solution of benzene and toluene

Benzene and toluene are very similar in molecular size and intermolecular forces, so they form an ideal solution.

For an ideal solution, ΔVmix=0\Delta V_{\text{mix}} = 0ΔVmix=0

So, (C)→(IV)(C) \to (IV)(C)→(IV)

(D) Solution of acetic acid in benzene

Acetic acid in benzene undergoes association (dimerization) due to hydrogen bonding.

So, (D)→(II)(D) \to (II)(D)→(II)

  1. Final matching

Thus the correct match is:

(A)−(III),(B)−(I),(C)−(IV),(D)−(II)(A)-(III),\quad (B)-(I),\quad (C)-(IV),\quad (D)-(II)(A)−(III),(B)−(I),(C)−(IV),(D)−(II)
  1. Compare with options

This corresponds to Option A.

  1. Comparison with stored correct answer

Stored correct answer = A

Our derived answer = A

Hence, the derived answer agrees with the stored correct answer.
