0.05M CuSO40.05 \mathrm{M} \mathrm{~CuSO}_40.05M CuSO4 when treated with 0.01M K2Cr2O70.01 \mathrm{M} \mathrm{~K}_2 \mathrm{Cr}_2 \mathrm{O}_70.01M K2Cr2O7 gives green colour solution of Cu2Cr2O7\mathrm{Cu}_2 \mathrm{Cr}_2 \mathrm{O}_7Cu2Cr2O7. The two solutions are separated as shown below : [SPM : Semi Permeable Membrane] JEE Main 2024 (Online) 9th April Morning Shift Chemistry - Solutions Question 29 English Due to osmosis :

Correct answer: C

  1. Use osmotic pressure to determine direction of osmosis
    For dilute solutions, π=iMRT\pi = iMRTπ=iMRT So we compare iMiMiM for the two sides.
  • For CuSO4\mathrm{CuSO_4}CuSO4: CuSO4→Cu2++SO42−\mathrm{CuSO_4 \rightarrow Cu^{2+} + SO_4^{2-}}CuSO4→Cu2++SO42− Hence, ideally i=2i=2i=2. Given molarity =0.05 M=0.05\,\mathrm{M}=0.05M, so iM=2×0.05=0.10iM = 2 \times 0.05 = 0.10iM=2×0.05=0.10

  • For K2Cr2O7\mathrm{K_2Cr_2O_7}K2Cr2O7: K2Cr2O7→2K++Cr2O72−\mathrm{K_2Cr_2O_7 \rightarrow 2K^+ + Cr_2O_7^{2-}}K2Cr2O7→2K++Cr2O72− Hence, ideally i=3i=3i=3. Given molarity =0.01 M=0.01\,\mathrm{M}=0.01M, so iM=3×0.01=0.03iM = 3 \times 0.01 = 0.03iM=3×0.01=0.03

Thus, πCuSO4>πK2Cr2O7\pi_{\mathrm{CuSO_4}} > \pi_{\mathrm{K_2Cr_2O_7}}πCuSO4>πK2Cr2O7 So solvent flows from the K2Cr2O7\mathrm{K_2Cr_2O_7}K2Cr2O7 side to the CuSO4\mathrm{CuSO_4}CuSO4 side.

  1. Effect on molarity
    Since solvent enters the CuSO4\mathrm{CuSO_4}CuSO4 solution, that solution gets diluted. Therefore its molarity decreases.

So,

  • molarity of CuSO4\mathrm{CuSO_4}CuSO4 decreases,
  • molarity of K2Cr2O7\mathrm{K_2Cr_2O_7}K2Cr2O7 would increase (not decrease), because solvent leaves that side.

Hence:

  • A is false
  • C is true
  1. Where will green colour appear?
    The green colour is due to formation of Cu2Cr2O7\mathrm{Cu_2Cr_2O_7}Cu2Cr2O7 when the two solutions come into contact. But a semi-permeable membrane allows only solvent molecules to pass, not solute ions. Therefore the solutes do not mix across the membrane.

So green colour due to reaction product will not be observed merely because of osmosis on either side X or Y.

Hence:

  • B is false
  • D is false
  1. Final answer
    The correct option is: C\boxed{\text{C}}C
