Correct answer: 4

  1. Use freezing point depression formula

    ΔTf=iKfm\Delta T_f = iK_f mΔTf=iKfm

    For dilute aqueous solutions, comparing same solvent and same concentration, we only need to compare the van’t Hoff factor iii.

    The solution with larger iii will have greater depression in freezing point, hence lower freezing point.

  2. Reference solution: 0.10 M  C2H5OH0.10\,M\; C_2H_5OH0.10MC2H5OH

    Ethanol is a non-electrolyte, so it does not dissociate.

    i=1i = 1i=1

  3. Check each given solution

    (i) 0.10 M  Ba3(PO4)20.10\,M\; Ba_3(PO_4)_20.10MBa3(PO4)2

    It dissociates as: Ba3(PO4)2→3Ba2++2PO43−Ba_3(PO_4)_2 \rightarrow 3Ba^{2+} + 2PO_4^{3-}Ba3(PO4)2→3Ba2++2PO43− Total ions formed =5= 5=5

    i≈5>1i \approx 5 > 1i≈5>1

    So its freezing point is lower than that of ethanol solution.

    (ii) 0.10 M  Na2SO40.10\,M\; Na_2SO_40.10MNa2SO4

    Dissociation: Na2SO4→2Na++SO42−Na_2SO_4 \rightarrow 2Na^+ + SO_4^{2-}Na2SO4→2Na++SO42− Total ions formed =3= 3=3

    i≈3>1i \approx 3 > 1i≈3>1

    So its freezing point is lower.

    (iii) 0.10 M  KCl0.10\,M\; KCl0.10MKCl

    Dissociation: KCl→K++Cl−KCl \rightarrow K^+ + Cl^-KCl→K++Cl− Total ions formed =2= 2=2

    i≈2>1i \approx 2 > 1i≈2>1

    So its freezing point is lower.

    (iv) 0.10 M  Li3PO40.10\,M\; Li_3PO_40.10MLi3PO4

    Dissociation: Li3PO4→3Li++PO43−Li_3PO_4 \rightarrow 3Li^+ + PO_4^{3-}Li3PO4→3Li++PO43− Total ions formed =4= 4=4

    i≈4>1i \approx 4 > 1i≈4>1

    So its freezing point is lower.

  4. Count the number of such solutions

    All four solutions have i>1i>1i>1, while ethanol has i=1i=1i=1.

    Therefore, all 4 solutions have lower freezing point than 0.10 M  C2H5OH0.10\,M\; C_2H_5OH0.10MC2H5OH.

  5. Final answer

    4\boxed{4}4

  6. Comparison with stored correct answer

    Stored correct answer = 444

    Our derived answer matches it.
