  1. Write the structures of the acids

    • Peroxodisulphuric acid: H2S2O8\mathrm{H_2S_2O_8}H2​S2​O8​
    • Pyrosulphuric acid: H2S2O7\mathrm{H_2S_2O_7}H2​S2​O7​
  2. Count π\piπ-bonds in peroxodisulphuric acid, H2S2O8\mathrm{H_2S_2O_8}H2​S2​O8​

    Its structure can be represented as: HO−S(=O)2−O−O−S(=O)2−OH\mathrm{HO{-}S(=O)_2{-}O{-}O{-}S(=O)_2{-}OH}HO−S(=O)2​−O−O−S(=O)2​−OH

    • Each sulphur atom has two S=O\mathrm{S=O}S=O double bonds.
    • Total number of S=O\mathrm{S=O}S=O double bonds: 2+2=42 + 2 = 42+2=4
    • Each double bond contributes one π\piπ-bond.

    Therefore, total π\piπ-bonds in H2S2O8\mathrm{H_2S_2O_8}H2​S2​O8​: 444

  3. Count π\piπ-bonds in pyrosulphuric acid, H2S2O7\mathrm{H_2S_2O_7}H2​S2​O7​

    Its structure can be represented as: HO−S(=O)2−O−S(=O)2−OH\mathrm{HO{-}S(=O)_2{-}O{-}S(=O)_2{-}OH}HO−S(=O)2​−O−S(=O)2​−OH
