Correct answer: A

  1. Identify what the reagent does

    Acidified potassium dichromate paper contains K2Cr2O7 \mathrm{K_2Cr_2O_7}K2Cr2O7 in acidic medium.

    In acidic solution, dichromate ion is orange and gets reduced to Cr3+ \mathrm{Cr^{3+}}Cr3+, which is green:

    Cr2O72−+14H++6e−→2Cr3++7H2O\mathrm{Cr_2O_7^{2-} + 14H^+ + 6e^- \rightarrow 2Cr^{3+} + 7H_2O}Cr2O72−+14H++6e−→2Cr3++7H2O

    So, the paper turns green when it comes in contact with a reducing agent.

  2. Check each option

    Option A: SO2\mathrm{SO_2}SO2

    Sulphur dioxide is a reducing agent. It reduces acidified dichromate to Cr3+\mathrm{Cr^{3+}}Cr3+.

    The reaction is:

    Cr2O72−+3SO2+2H+→2Cr3++3SO42−+H2O\mathrm{Cr_2O_7^{2-} + 3SO_2 + 2H^+ \rightarrow 2Cr^{3+} + 3SO_4^{2-} + H_2O}Cr2O72−+3SO2+2H+→2Cr3++3SO42−+H2O

    Hence, orange dichromate paper turns green.

    So, A is correct.

    Option B: SO3\mathrm{SO_3}SO3

    Sulphur trioxide is not a reducing agent; it is the anhydride of sulphuric acid. It does not reduce dichromate to Cr3+\mathrm{Cr^{3+}}Cr3+.

    So, B is incorrect.

    Option C: H2S\mathrm{H_2S}H2S

    Hydrogen sulphide is also a reducing agent and can reduce dichromate strongly. In acidic medium, it can reduce dichromate to green Cr3+\mathrm{Cr^{3+}}Cr3+.

    Thus chemically, H2S\mathrm{H_2S}H2S can also turn acidified dichromate green.

    Option D: CO2\mathrm{CO_2}CO2

    Carbon dioxide is neither reducing nor oxidizing under these conditions. No such color change occurs.

    So, D is incorrect.

  3. Exam-oriented conclusion

    In standard qualitative chemistry, acidified potassium dichromate paper is classically used as a test for sulphur dioxide, which turns it from orange to green.

    Although H2S\mathrm{H_2S}H2S is also a reducing gas, the expected single-correct answer in this MCQ is:

    A: Sulphur dioxide\boxed{\text{A: Sulphur dioxide}}A: Sulphur dioxide

  4. Comparison with stored correct answer

    Stored correct answer: A

    My derived answer: A

    Therefore, they agree.
