  1. Write the structure of Hex-1,3-dien-5-yne

    The name tells us:

    • Hex →\rightarrow→ 6 carbon atoms
    • 1,3-dien →\rightarrow→ double bonds at positions 1 and 3
    • 5-yne →\rightarrow→ triple bond at position 5

    So the carbon chain is: C1=C2−C3=C4−C5≡C6\mathrm{C_1=C_2-C_3=C_4-C_5\equiv C_6}C1​=C2​−C3​=C4​−C5​≡C6​

    Now add hydrogens to satisfy valency: CH2=CH−CH=CH−C≡CH\mathrm{CH_2=CH-CH=CH-C\equiv CH}CH2​=CH−CH=CH−C≡CH

  2. Count the σ\sigmaσ bonds

    (a) Carbon-carbon σ\sigmaσ bonds

    Every bond between two carbons contributes one σ\sigmaσ bond, whether it is single, double, or triple.

    There are 5 C-C connections in a 6-carbon chain: C1−C2,  C2−C3,  C3−C4,  C4−C5,  C5−C6C_1-C_2,\; C_2-C_3,\; C_3-C_4,\; C_4-C_5,\; C_5-C_6C1​−C2​,C2​−C3​,C3​−C4​,C4​−C5​,C5​−C6​ So, C-C σ bonds=5\text{C-C }\sigma\text{ bonds} = 5C-C σ bonds=5

    (b) Carbon-hydrogen σ\sigmaσ bonds

    From the structure CH2=CH−CH=CH−C≡CH\mathrm{CH_2=CH-CH=CH-C\equiv CH}CH2​=CH−CH=CH−C≡CH:

    • C1\mathrm{C_1}C1​ has 2 H
    • C2\mathrm{C_2}C2​ has 1 H
    • C3\mathrm{C_3}C3​ has 1 H
    • C4\mathrm{C_4}C4​ has 1 H
    • C5\mathrm{C_5}C5​ has 0 H
    • C6\mathrm{C_6}C6​ has 1 H

    Total H atoms: 2+1+1+1+0+1=62+1+1+1+0+1=62+1+1+1+0+1=6 Hence, C-H σ bonds=6\text{C-H }\sigma\text{ bonds} = 6C-H σ bonds=6

    Therefore total σ\sigmaσ bonds: σ=5+6=11\sigma = 5+6=11σ=5+6=11

  3. Count the π\piπ bonds

    • Each double bond has 1 π\piπ bond
    • Each triple bond has 2 π\piπ bonds

    Here we have:

    • 2 double bonds →2π\rightarrow 2\pi→2π
    • 1 triple bond →2π\rightarrow 2\pi→2π

    So, π=2+2=4\pi = 2+2=4π=2+2=4

  4. Total number of σ+π\sigma + \piσ+π bonds

    σ+π=11+4=15\sigma + \pi = 11+4=15σ+π=11+4=15
