Correct answer: B

  1. Determine the metal ion configuration

In [Cr(H2O)6]3+[Cr(H_2O)_6]^{3+}[Cr(H2O)6]3+, water is a neutral ligand, so the oxidation state of chromium is +3+3+3.

Chromium: Z=24Z=24Z=24

Neutral chromium configuration: [Ar]3d54s1[Ar]3d^54s^1[Ar]3d54s1

For Cr3+Cr^{3+}Cr3+, remove three electrons:

  • one from 4s4s4s
  • two from 3d3d3d

So, Cr3+=[Ar]3d3Cr^{3+} = [Ar]3d^3Cr3+=[Ar]3d3

  1. Geometry and crystal field splitting

[Cr(H2O)6]3+[Cr(H_2O)_6]^{3+}[Cr(H2O)6]3+ is a hexaaqua complex with coordination number 666, so it has octahedral geometry.

In an octahedral field, the five ddd-orbitals split into:

  • lower energy t2gt_{2g}t2g set: dxy,dxz,dyzd_{xy}, d_{xz}, d_{yz}dxy,dxz,dyz
  • higher energy ege_geg set: dx2−y2,dz2d_{x^2-y^2}, d_{z^2}dx2−y2,dz2

Thus, orbitals within each set are degenerate.

  1. Check the options
  • A: dx2−y2d_{x^2-y^2}dx2−y2 and dxzd_{xz}dxz
These belong to different sets (ege_geg and t2gt_{2g}t2g), so not degenerate.

  • B: dxzd_{xz}dxz and dyzd_{yz}dyz
Both belong to the t2gt_{2g}t2g set, so they are degenerate.

  • C: dyzd_{yz}dyz and dz2d_{z^2}dz2
These belong to different sets, so not degenerate.

  • D: dx2−y2d_{x^2-y^2}dx2−y2 and dxyd_{xy}dxy
These belong to different sets, so not degenerate.

  1. Conclusion

The degenerate orbitals are: dxz and dyzd_{xz} \text{ and } d_{yz}dxz and dyz

So the correct option is B.
