Given below are two statements : Statement (I) : Kjeldahl method is applicable to estimate nitrogen in pyridine. Statement (II) : The nitrogen present in pyridine can easily be converted into ammonium sulphate in Kjeldahl method. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below :
  1. A
Both Statement I and Statement II are true
  2. B
Both Statement I and Statement II are false
  3. C
Statement I is true but Statement II is false
  4. D
Statement I is false but Statement II is true

Correct answer: B

  1. Recall the Kjeldahl method

In the Kjeldahl method, nitrogen in an organic compound is converted into ammonium sulphate by heating with concentrated H2SO4\mathrm{H_2SO_4}H2SO4.

This method is not applicable for nitrogen present in certain forms such as:

    • nitro group (−NO2)(-\mathrm{NO_2})(−NO2)
    • azo group (−N=N−)(-\mathrm{N=N}-)(−N=N−)
    • nitrogen present in rings such as pyridine and some other heterocyclic compounds
  2. Examine Statement (I)

Statement (I): Kjeldahl method is applicable to estimate nitrogen in pyridine.

Since pyridine contains ring nitrogen, and such nitrogen is not converted easily into ammonium sulphate in the Kjeldahl process, the method is not applicable.

    Therefore, Statement (I) is false.

  3. Examine Statement (II)

Statement (II): The nitrogen present in pyridine can easily be converted into ammonium sulphate in Kjeldahl method.

This is the reason Kjeldahl fails for pyridine: the ring nitrogen is not easily converted into (NH4)2SO4\mathrm{(NH_4)_2SO_4}(NH4)2SO4.

    Therefore, Statement (II) is false.

  4. Choose the correct option

    • Statement (I): False
    • Statement (II): False

Hence, the correct option is B: Both Statement I and Statement II are false.

  5. Comparison with stored answer

    Stored correct answer = B

    My derived answer = B

So, the answer agrees with the stored answer.
