Given below are two statements : Statement (I) : The NH2\mathrm{NH}_2NH2 group in Aniline is ortho and para directing and a powerful activating group. Statement (II) : Aniline does not undergo Friedel-Craft's reaction (alkylation and acylation). In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. A
Both Statement I and Statement II are correct
  2. B
Both Statement I and Statement II are incorrect
  3. C
Statement I is correct but Statement II is incorrect
  4. D
Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is correct

Correct answer: A

  1. Examine Statement (I)

Statement (I): The NH2\mathrm{NH_2}NH2 group in aniline is ortho and para directing and a powerful activating group.

    • In aniline, the amino group (−NH2)(-\mathrm{NH_2})(−NH2) has a lone pair on nitrogen.
    • This lone pair gets delocalized into the benzene ring by resonance.
    • Because of this electron donation, the electron density increases especially at the ortho and para positions.
    • Therefore, −NH2-\mathrm{NH_2}−NH2 is:
      • ortho/para directing
      • strongly activating toward electrophilic substitution

    So, Statement (I) is correct.

  2. Examine Statement (II)

Statement (II): Aniline does not undergo Friedel-Craft's reaction (alkylation and acylation).

This is also correct. The reason is:

    • Friedel-Crafts reactions require a Lewis acid catalyst such as AlCl3\mathrm{AlCl_3}AlCl3.
    • The basic amino group in aniline reacts with AlCl3\mathrm{AlCl_3}AlCl3 to form a salt/complex.
    • This decreases the electron density on the benzene ring and deactivates it.
    • Hence, aniline does not undergo Friedel-Crafts alkylation or acylation under usual conditions.

    So, Statement (II) is correct.

  3. Choose the correct option

Since both Statement (I) and Statement (II) are correct, the correct option is:

    A\boxed{\text{A}}A

  4. Comparison with stored correct answer

    • Derived answer: A\boxed{\text{A}}A
    • Stored correct answer: A\boxed{\text{A}}A

    They match.
