In the following system, PCl5( g)⇋PCl3( g)+Cl2( g)\mathrm{PCl}_5(\mathrm{~g}) \leftrightharpoons \mathrm{PCl}_3(\mathrm{~g})+\mathrm{Cl}_2(\mathrm{~g})PCl5( g)⇋PCl3( g)+Cl2( g) at equilibrium, upon addition of xenon gas at constant T \& p , the concentration of
  1. A
    PCl5,PCl3&Cl2\mathrm{PCl}_5, \mathrm{PCl}_3 \& \mathrm{Cl}_2PCl5,PCl3&Cl2 remain constant
  2. B
    PCl3\mathrm{PCl}_3PCl3 will increase
  3. C
    Cl2\mathrm{Cl}_2Cl2 will decrease
  4. D
    PCl5\mathrm{PCl}_5PCl5 will increase

Correct answer: B

  1. Given equilibrium

PCl5(g)⇌PCl3(g)+Cl2(g)\mathrm{PCl_5(g)} \rightleftharpoons \mathrm{PCl_3(g)} + \mathrm{Cl_2(g)}PCl5(g)⇌PCl3(g)+Cl2(g)

Here,

  • Left side moles of gas =1= 1=1
  • Right side moles of gas =2= 2=2

So,

Δn=2−1=+1\Delta n = 2 - 1 = +1Δn=2−1=+1

  1. What happens when xenon is added at constant TTT and ppp?

Xenon is an inert gas. At constant temperature and pressure, adding an inert gas increases the total volume of the system.

As volume increases, the partial pressures of all reacting gases decrease.

If all partial pressures are reduced by the same factor kkk (k<1k<1k<1), then the reaction quotient becomes

Qp=PPCl3 PCl2PPCl5Q_p = \frac{P_{\mathrm{PCl_3}}\,P_{\mathrm{Cl_2}}}{P_{\mathrm{PCl_5}}}Qp=PPCl5PPCl3PCl2

After dilution,

Qp′=(kPPCl3)(kPCl2)kPPCl5=k QpQ_p' = \frac{(kP_{\mathrm{PCl_3}})(kP_{\mathrm{Cl_2}})}{kP_{\mathrm{PCl_5}}} = k\,Q_pQp′=kPPCl5(kPPCl3)(kPCl2)=kQp

Since initially at equilibrium, Qp=KpQ_p = K_pQp=Kp, we get

Qp′=kKp<KpQ_p' = kK_p < K_pQp′=kKp<Kp

Thus,

Qp′<KpQ_p' < K_pQp′<Kp

So the equilibrium shifts forward (towards more moles of gas) to increase QpQ_pQp.

  1. Effect on concentrations of species

Forward shift means:

  • PCl5\mathrm{PCl_5}PCl5 decreases
  • PCl3\mathrm{PCl_3}PCl3 increases
  • Cl2\mathrm{Cl_2}Cl2 increases

Hence,

  • Option A is false
  • Option B is true
  • Option C is false
  • Option D is false
  1. Correct option

B: PCl3 will increase\boxed{\text{B: } \mathrm{PCl_3} \text{ will increase}}B: PCl3 will increase

  1. Comparison with stored answer

Stored correct answer: B

My derived answer: B

They agree.
