Identify correct statement/s : (A) −OCH3-\mathrm{OCH}_3−OCH3 and −NHCOCH3-\mathrm{NHCOCH}_3−NHCOCH3 are activating group. (B) −CN\quad-\mathrm{CN}−CN and -OH are meta directing group. (C) -CN and −SO3H-\mathrm{SO}_3 \mathrm{H}−SO3H are meta directing group. (D) Activating groups act as ortho - and para directing groups. (E) Halides are activating groups. Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
  1. A
    (A),(C)(A),(C)(A),(C) and (D) only
  2. B
    (A),(B)(A),(B)(A),(B) and (E)(E)(E) only
  3. C
    (A) and (C) only
  4. D
    (A) only

Correct answer: A

  1. Recall the directing and activating/deactivating effects in electrophilic aromatic substitution

    • Activating groups donate electron density to the benzene ring and generally direct incoming electrophiles to the ortho and para positions.
    • Deactivating groups withdraw electron density and are generally meta directors.
    • Exception: Halogens are deactivating but ortho/para directing.
  2. Check each statement

    (A) −OCH3-\mathrm{OCH}_3−OCH3 and −NHCOCH3-\mathrm{NHCOCH}_3−NHCOCH3 are activating group.

    • −OCH3-\mathrm{OCH}_3−OCH3 donates electron density by resonance: activating.
    • −NHCOCH3-\mathrm{NHCOCH}_3−NHCOCH3 (acetamido) also donates by resonance from nitrogen lone pair: activating.

    Hence, (A) is correct.

    (B) −CN-\mathrm{CN}−CN and −OH-\mathrm{OH}−OH are meta directing group.

    • −CN-\mathrm{CN}−CN is electron withdrawing, so it is meta directing.
    • But −OH-\mathrm{OH}−OH is strongly activating and ortho/para directing, not meta directing.

    Hence, (B) is incorrect.

    (C) −CN-\mathrm{CN}−CN and −SO3H-\mathrm{SO}_3\mathrm{H}−SO3H are meta directing group.

    • −CN-\mathrm{CN}−CN is a meta director.
    • −SO3H-\mathrm{SO}_3\mathrm{H}−SO3H is strongly electron withdrawing and also meta directing.

    Hence, (C) is correct.

    (D) Activating groups act as ortho- and para-directing groups.

    • This is the standard rule for electrophilic aromatic substitution.

    Hence, (D) is correct.

    (E) Halides are activating groups.

    • Halogens are deactivating due to strong −I-I−I effect, though they are ortho/para directing because of resonance.

    Hence, (E) is incorrect.

  3. Collect correct statements

    Correct statements are: (A),(C),(D)(A), (C), (D)(A),(C),(D)

  4. Match with options

    • Option A: (A),(C)(A),(C)(A),(C) and (D)(D)(D) only ✅
    • Option B: includes wrong statements (B)(B)(B) and (E)(E)(E) ❌
    • Option C: misses (D)(D)(D) ❌
    • Option D: incomplete ❌

Therefore, the correct option is A.
