A. nnn-propanol and isopropanol

  • nnn-propanol: CH3−CH2−CH2OHCH_3-CH_2-CH_2OHCH3​−CH2​−CH2​OH
  • isopropanol: CH3−CHOH−CH3CH_3-CHOH-CH_3CH3​−CHOH−CH3​

Both have the same carbon skeleton of propane, but the −OH-OH−OH group is at different positions:

  • in nnn-propanol, −OH-OH−OH is on carbon 1
  • in isopropanol, −OH-OH−OH is on carbon 2

So, they show position isomerism.

Thus, A→IIIA \to IIIA→III


B. Methoxypropane and ethoxyethane

These are ethers:

  • methoxypropane: CH3−O−C3H7CH_3-O-C_3H_7CH3​−O−C3​H7​
  • ethoxyethane: C2H5−O−C2H5C_2H_5-O-C_2H_5C2​H5​−O−C2​H5​

They have the same functional group (ether), but different alkyl groups on the two sides of oxygen. This is metamerism.

C. Propanone and propanal

  • propanone: ketone
  • propanal: aldehyde

They have the same molecular formula but different functional groups, so they are functional isomers.

Thus, C→IVC \to IVC→IV


D. Neopentane and isopentane

  • neopentane and isopentane differ in the arrangement of the carbon chain
  • same molecular formula, different carbon skeleton

So, they show chain isomerism.

Thus, D→IID \to IID→II
