Correct answer: 2

  1. Write the structure of 2-chlorobutane

    The compound is: CH3−CH(Cl)−CH2−CH3\mathrm{CH_3-CH(Cl)-CH_2-CH_3}CH3−CH(Cl)−CH2−CH3

  2. Identify the stereogenic (chiral) carbon

The second carbon atom is attached to four different groups:

    • H\mathrm{H}H
    • Cl\mathrm{Cl}Cl
    • CH3\mathrm{CH_3}CH3
    • CH2CH3\mathrm{CH_2CH_3}CH2CH3

Since all four substituents are different, carbon-2 is a chiral center.

  3. Use the rule for number of optical isomers

For a molecule with one chiral center and no internal plane of symmetry, Number of optical isomers=2n\text{Number of optical isomers} = 2^nNumber of optical isomers=2n where nnn is the number of chiral centers.

    Here, n=1n=1n=1, so 21=22^1 = 221=2

  4. Interpretation

These two optical isomers are a pair of enantiomers:

    • one is (R)(R)(R)-2-chlorobutane
    • the other is (S)(S)(S)-2-chlorobutane
  5. Final answer

    2\boxed{2}2
