Given below are two statements : Statement I : A mixture of chloroform and aniline can be separated by simple distillation.     Statement I: A mixture of chloroform and aniline can be separated by simple distillation.

    • Boiling point of chloroform ≈61∘C\approx 61^\circ\text{C}≈61∘C
    • Boiling point of aniline ≈184∘C\approx 184^\circ\text{C}≈184∘C

    The difference in boiling points is very large: 184−61=123∘C184 - 61 = 123^\circ\text{C}184−61=123∘C

    Since the boiling point difference is much greater than 252525–30∘C30^\circ\text{C}30∘C, simple distillation can be used effectively.

    Therefore, Statement I is true.

  2. Analyze Statement II

    Statement II: When separating aniline from a mixture of aniline and water by steam distillation aniline boils below its boiling point.

    In steam distillation:

    • A water-insoluble or slightly water-soluble organic liquid is distilled with water.
    • The mixture boils when the sum of vapour pressures of water and the organic compound equals atmospheric pressure.
    • Therefore, the organic compound distils at a temperature lower than its normal boiling point.

    Since aniline is steam volatile, it can be separated from water by steam distillation and it distils below 184∘C184^\circ\text{C}184∘C.

    Therefore, Statement II is true.
