Silver Mirror test is given by which one of the following compounds ?
  1. A
    Acetone
  2. B
    Formaldehyde
  3. C
    Benzophenone
  4. D
    Acetaldehyde

Correct answer: D, B

  1. What is the Silver Mirror test?

The Silver Mirror test is Tollens' test. A compound gives this test if it can reduce Tollens' reagent, [Ag(NH3)2]+[Ag(NH_3)_2]^+[Ag(NH3)2]+, to metallic silver.

    The general reaction is: RCHO+2[Ag(NH3)2]++3OH−→RCOO−+2Ag↓+4NH3+2H2ORCHO + 2[Ag(NH_3)_2]^+ + 3OH^- \rightarrow RCOO^- + 2Ag \downarrow + 4NH_3 + 2H_2ORCHO+2[Ag(NH3)2]++3OH−→RCOO−+2Ag↓+4NH3+2H2O

So, aldehydes generally give the silver mirror test, while ordinary ketones do not.

  2. Check each option independently

    A: Acetone

Acetone is a ketone: CH3COCH3CH_3COCH_3CH3COCH3 Ordinary ketones do not reduce Tollens' reagent.

    Therefore, A is incorrect.

    B: Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is an aldehyde: HCHOHCHOHCHO Aldehydes give Tollens' test.

    Therefore, B is correct.

    C: Benzophenone

Benzophenone is a ketone: (C6H5)2CO(C_6H_5)_2CO(C6H5)2CO It does not give Tollens' test.

    Therefore, C is incorrect.

    D: Acetaldehyde

Acetaldehyde is an aldehyde: CH3CHOCH_3CHOCH3CHO Aldehydes give Tollens' test.

    Therefore, D is correct.

  3. Final derived answer

The compounds that give the Silver Mirror test are: B and D\boxed{\text{B and D}}B and D

  4. Comparison with stored correct answer

    Stored correct answer: D, B

    My derived answer: B, D

These are the same set of correct options, just written in different order.
