    This reaction proceeds through a carbocation intermediate and follows Markovnikov addition.

  2. General outcome of hydration

    In Markovnikov addition, the proton adds in such a way that the more stable carbocation is formed. Then water attacks that carbocation.

    Since carbocation stability is: 3∘>2∘>1∘3^\circ > 2^\circ > 1^\circ3∘>2∘>1∘ the reaction tends to form secondary or tertiary carbocations, and therefore gives secondary or tertiary alcohols.

  3. Why ethene is excluded
