An ideal gas is in thermodynamic equilibrium. The number of degrees of freedom of a molecule of the gas is nnn. The internal energy of one mole of the gas is UnU_nUn and the speed of sound in the gas is vn\mathrm{v}_nvn. At a fixed temperature and pressure, which of the following is the correct option?
  1. A
    v3U6v_3 U_6v3U6
  2. B
    v5>v3v_5 \gt v_3v5>v3 and U3>U5U_3 \gt U_5U3>U5
  3. C
    v5>v7v_5 \gt v_7v5>v7 and U5<U7U_5 \lt U_7U5<U7
  4. D
    v6<v7v_6 \lt v_7v6<v7 and U6<U7U_6 \lt U_7U6<U7

Correct answer: C

  1. Internal energy of one mole of an ideal gas

For an ideal gas with nnn degrees of freedom, the internal energy of 111 mole is

Un=n2RTU_n = \frac{n}{2}RTUn=2nRT

At fixed temperature TTT, we have

Un∝nU_n \propto nUn∝n

So,

U3<U5<U6<U7U_3 < U_5 < U_6 < U_7U3<U5<U6<U7

  1. Speed of sound in an ideal gas

The speed of sound is

v=γPρv = \sqrt{\gamma \frac{P}{\rho}}v=γρP

Using ρ=PMRT\rho = \frac{PM}{RT}ρ=RTPM,

v=γRTMv = \sqrt{\gamma \frac{RT}{M}}v=γMRT

At fixed temperature and pressure, for the same gas family comparison here, dependence is through γ\gammaγ.

For an ideal gas with nnn degrees of freedom,

CV=n2R,CP=CV+R=n+22RC_V = \frac{n}{2}R, \qquad C_P = C_V + R = \frac{n+2}{2}RCV=2nR,CP=CV+R=2n+2R

Hence,

γ=CPCV=n+2n\gamma = \frac{C_P}{C_V} = \frac{n+2}{n}γ=CVCP=nn+2

Therefore,

vn∝γ=n+2nv_n \propto \sqrt{\gamma} = \sqrt{\frac{n+2}{n}}vn∝γ=nn+2

Now check values:

γ3=53,γ5=75,γ6=86=43,γ7=97\gamma_3 = \frac{5}{3}, \qquad \gamma_5 = \frac{7}{5}, \qquad \gamma_6 = \frac{8}{6} = \frac{4}{3}, \qquad \gamma_7 = \frac{9}{7}γ3=35,γ5=57,γ6=68=34,γ7=79

As nnn increases, γ\gammaγ decreases. Therefore,

v3>v5>v6>v7v_3 > v_5 > v_6 > v_7v3>v5>v6>v7

  1. Check each option

Option A: v3U6v_3 U_6v3U6

This is not a complete relation/equality/inequality, so it is not a meaningful correct option.

Option B: v5>v3v_5 > v_3v5>v3 and U3>U5U_3 > U_5U3>U5

But we found

v5<v3v_5 < v_3v5<v3

and

U3<U5U_3 < U_5U3<U5

So option B is false.

Option C: v5>v7v_5 > v_7v5>v7 and U5<U7U_5 < U_7U5<U7

From above,

v5>v7v_5 > v_7v5>v7

and

U5<U7U_5 < U_7U5<U7

So option C is true.

Option D: v6<v7v_6 < v_7v6<v7 and U6<U7U_6 < U_7U6<U7

We found

v6>v7v_6 > v_7v6>v7

though nU6<U7U_6 < U_7U6<U7

Since the first part is false, option D is false.

  1. Final answer

The correct option is

C\boxed{\text{C}}C

This matches the stored correct answer.
