Extra very pure N2N_2N2 can be obtained by heating
  1. A
    NH3NH_3NH3 with CuOCuOCuO
  2. B
    NH4NO3NH_4NO_3NH4NO3
  3. C
    (NH4)2CrO7(NH_4)_2CrO_7(NH4)2CrO7
  4. D
    Ba(N3)2Ba(N_3)_2Ba(N3)2
View written solutionFree

Correct answer: D

  1. We need the substance which on heating gives extra very pure nitrogen gas, N2N_2N2.

  2. Check each option:

    A. NH3NH_3NH3 with CuOCuOCuO

The reaction is: 2NH3+3CuO→N2+3Cu+3H2O2NH_3 + 3CuO \rightarrow N_2 + 3Cu + 3H_2O2NH3+3CuO→N2+3Cu+3H2O Although N2N_2N2 is formed, the gas mixture contains water vapour and may also have impurities. So this is not the best source of extra very pure N2N_2N2.

    B. NH4NO3NH_4NO_3NH4NO3

On heating: NH4NO3→N2O+2H2ONH_4NO_3 \rightarrow N_2O + 2H_2ONH4NO3→N2O+2H2O This gives nitrous oxide (N2O)(N_2O)(N2O), not nitrogen gas. So this is incorrect.

    C. (NH4)2CrO7(NH_4)_2CrO_7(NH4)2CrO7

On heating: (NH4)2CrO7→N2+Cr2O3+4H2O(NH_4)_2CrO_7 \rightarrow N_2 + Cr_2O_3 + 4H_2O(NH4)2CrO7→N2+Cr2O3+4H2O Nitrogen is formed, but water vapour is also produced. Hence the nitrogen is not obtained directly in extra very pure form.

    D. Ba(N3)2Ba(N_3)_2Ba(N3)2

Metal azides decompose on heating to give pure nitrogen: Ba(N3)2→Ba+3N2Ba(N_3)_2 \rightarrow Ba + 3N_2Ba(N3)2→Ba+3N2 Since the only gaseous product is N2N_2N2, it is obtained in extra very pure form.

  3. Therefore, the correct option is: D\boxed{D}D
