Correct answer: D

  1. Key idea: group separation with ammoniacal H2SH_2SH2S

In qualitative inorganic analysis, passing H2SH_2SH2S through an ammoniacal / basic medium increases the concentration of S2−S^{2-}S2− ions because: H2S⇌H++HS−⇌2H++S2−H_2S \rightleftharpoons H^+ + HS^- \rightleftharpoons 2H^+ + S^{2-}H2S⇌H++HS−⇌2H++S2− In basic medium, H+H^+H+ is removed, so the equilibrium shifts right and more S2−S^{2-}S2− is produced.

Therefore, those metal ions whose sulphides have very low solubility product precipitate as sulphides in ammoniacal medium.

  2. Examine each option

    A. Fe3+Fe^{3+}Fe3+
Fe3+Fe^{3+}Fe3+ does not normally precipitate as sulphide with ammoniacal H2SH_2SH2S. In basic/ammoniacal medium, iron is generally precipitated as hydroxide: Fe3++3OH−→Fe(OH)3↓Fe^{3+} + 3OH^- \rightarrow Fe(OH)_3 \downarrowFe3++3OH−→Fe(OH)3↓ So this is not the required ion.

    B. Al3+Al^{3+}Al3+
Aluminium does not precipitate as sulphide because Al2S3Al_2S_3Al2S3 is hydrolysed strongly in water. In ammoniacal medium, aluminium is precipitated as hydroxide: Al3++3OH−→Al(OH)3↓Al^{3+} + 3OH^- \rightarrow Al(OH)_3 \downarrowAl3++3OH−→Al(OH)3↓ So not correct.

    C. Mg2+Mg^{2+}Mg2+
MgSMgSMgS is sufficiently soluble / not precipitated under these conditions. Magnesium is not precipitated by ammoniacal H2SH_2SH2S as sulphide. So not correct.

    D. Zn2+Zn^{2+}Zn2+
Zinc belongs to the group of cations that precipitate as sulphides in ammoniacal medium: Zn2++S2−→ZnS↓Zn^{2+} + S^{2-} \rightarrow ZnS \downarrowZn2++S2−→ZnS↓ Hence Zn2+Zn^{2+}Zn2+ precipitates as zinc sulphide.

  3. Conclusion

The metal ion that precipitates as a sulphide upon treatment with ammoniacal H2SH_2SH2S is: Zn2+\boxed{Zn^{2+}}Zn2+

  4. Comparison with stored answer

    Stored correct answer = D
    Derived answer = D

Therefore, the derived answer agrees with the stored answer.
