Correct answer: B

  1. Check each compound for unpaired electrons

A compound is paramagnetic if it has one or more unpaired electrons.

  1. [Ni(CO)4][Ni(CO)_4][Ni(CO)4]
  • CO is a strong field ligand.
  • Oxidation state of Ni is 000.
  • Electronic configuration of NiNiNi: Ni:[Ar]3d84s2Ni: [Ar]3d^8 4s^2Ni:[Ar]3d84s2 So, Ni0=3d10Ni^0 = 3d^{10}Ni0=3d10.
  • d10d^{10}d10 has all electrons paired.

Hence, [Ni(CO)4][Ni(CO)_4][Ni(CO)4] is diamagnetic.

  1. [NiCl4]2−[NiCl_4]^{2-}[NiCl4]2−
  • Let oxidation state of Ni be xxx: x+4(−1)=−2⇒x=+2x+4(-1)=-2 \Rightarrow x=+2x+4(−1)=−2⇒x=+2
  • So, Ni2+Ni^{2+}Ni2+ is 3d83d^83d8.
  • Cl−Cl^-Cl− is a weak field ligand, and tetrahedral complexes are usually high spin.
  • Tetrahedral d8d^8d8 has 2 unpaired electrons.

Hence, [NiCl4]2−[NiCl_4]^{2-}[NiCl4]2− is paramagnetic.

  1. [Co(NH3)4Cl2]Cl[Co(NH_3)_4Cl_2]Cl[Co(NH3)4Cl2]Cl

The complex ion is [Co(NH3)4Cl2]+[Co(NH_3)_4Cl_2]^+[Co(NH3)4Cl2]+.

  • Let oxidation state of Co be xxx: x+4(0)+2(−1)=+1⇒x=+3x+4(0)+2(-1)=+1 \Rightarrow x=+3x+4(0)+2(−1)=+1⇒x=+3
  • So, Co3+Co^{3+}Co3+ is 3d63d^63d6.
  • Coordination number =6=6=6, so octahedral.
  • For Co3+Co^{3+}Co3+, even with NH3NH_3NH3 and Cl−Cl^-Cl− mixed ligands, octahedral d6d^6d6 is generally low spin due to high pairing tendency of Co3+Co^{3+}Co3+.
  • Low spin d6d^6d6: t2g6eg0t_{2g}^6 e_g^0t2g6eg0 all electrons paired.

Hence, [Co(NH3)4Cl2]Cl[Co(NH_3)_4Cl_2]Cl[Co(NH3)4Cl2]Cl is diamagnetic.

  1. Na3[CoF6]Na_3[CoF_6]Na3[CoF6]

The complex ion is [CoF6]3−[CoF_6]^{3-}[CoF6]3−.

  • Let oxidation state of Co be xxx: x+6(−1)=−3⇒x=+3x+6(-1)=-3 \Rightarrow x=+3x+6(−1)=−3⇒x=+3
  • So, Co3+Co^{3+}Co3+ is 3d63d^63d6.
  • F−F^-F− is a weak field ligand.
  • Octahedral weak field d6d^6d6 is high spin: t2g4eg2t_{2g}^4 e_g^2t2g4eg2
  • This has 4 unpaired electrons.

Hence, Na3[CoF6]Na_3[CoF_6]Na3[CoF6] is paramagnetic.

  1. Na2O2Na_2O_2Na2O2
  • This is sodium peroxide containing peroxide ion O22−O_2^{2-}O22−.
  • In O22−O_2^{2-}O22−, all electrons are paired.

Hence, Na2O2Na_2O_2Na2O2 is diamagnetic.

  1. CsO2CsO_2CsO2
  • This contains superoxide ion O2−O_2^-O2−.
  • O2−O_2^-O2− has one unpaired electron in molecular orbital theory.

Hence, CsO2CsO_2CsO2 is paramagnetic.

  1. Count paramagnetic compounds

Paramagnetic compounds are:

  • [NiCl4]2−[NiCl_4]^{2-}[NiCl4]2−
  • Na3[CoF6]Na_3[CoF_6]Na3[CoF6]
  • CsO2CsO_2CsO2

Total number =3=3=3.

  1. Compare with stored answer

Stored correct answer: B = 3

Our derived answer is also 3. So the stored answer is correct.
