Correct answer: 2

  1. Identify the structure of lysine
    Lysine contains:

    • one \alpha-amino group (−NH2)(-NH_2)(−NH2),
    • one side-chain amino group (−NH2)(-NH_2)(−NH2),
    • one carboxylic acid group (−COOH)(-COOH)(−COOH).
  2. Find the basic groups
A basic group is one that can accept a proton (H+H^+H+). In lysine:

    • the \alpha-amino group is basic,
    • the side-chain amino group is also basic.

The carboxylic acid group is acidic, not basic.

  3. Count the basic groups
Therefore, total number of basic groups in lysine =2= 2=2.

  4. Comparison with stored answer
    Derived answer =2= 2=2.

    Stored correct answer =2= 2=2.

Hence, the derived answer agrees with the stored answer.
