When a current loop is placed in a magnetic field it experiences a torque. It is given by

τ→=M→×B→\overrightarrow \tau = \overrightarrow M \times \overrightarrow B τ=M×B = MB sinθ\theta θ

where, M→\overrightarrow M M is the magnetic moment of the loop and B→\overrightarrow B B is the magnetic field.

If θ\theta θ = 0o ⇒\Rightarrow⇒ τ\tau τ = 0 (stable equilibrium)

If θ\theta θ = 180o ⇒\Rightarrow⇒ τ\tau τ = 0 (unstable equilibrium)
