The additional kinetic energy to be provided to a satellite of mass m revolving around a planet of mass M, to transfer it from a circular orbit of radius R1 to another of radius R2(R2 > R1) is
  1. A
    GmM (1R12−1R22)\left( {{1 \over {R_1^2}} - {1 \over {R_2^2}}} \right)(R121−R221)
  2. B
    GmM (1R1−1R2)\left( {{1 \over {{R_1}}} - {1 \over {{R_2}}}} \right)(R11−R21)
  3. C
    2GmM (1R1−1R2)\left( {{1 \over {{R_1}}} - {1 \over {{R_2}}}} \right)(R11−R21)

Correct answer: D

Total energy of the orbiting satellite of mass m having orbital radius r is

E=−GMm2rE = - {{GMm} \over {2r}}E=−2rGMm

where M is the mass of the planet.

Additional kinetic energy required to transfer the satellite from a circular orbit of radius R1 to another radius R2 is E2−E1

=−GMm2RE−(−GMm2R1)=−GMm2R2+GMm2R1 = - {{GMm} \over {2{R_E}}} - \left( { - {{GMm} \over {2{R_1}}}} \right) = - {{GMm} \over {2{R_2}}} + {{GMm} \over {2{R_1}}}=−2REGMm−(−2R1GMm)=−2R2GMm+2R1GMm

=GMm2(1R1−1R2) = {{GMm} \over 2}\left( {{1 \over {{R_1}}} - {1 \over {{R_2}}}} \right)=2GMm(R11−R21)
