NEETPhysicsGravitationMCQ+4 / −1
The figure shows elliptical orbit of a planet m about the sun S. The shaded area SCD is twice the shaded area SAB. If t1 is the time for the planet to move from C to D and t2 is the time to move from A to B then

AIPMT 2009 Physics - Gravitation Question 34 English
  1. A
    t1 = 4t2
  2. B
    t1 = 2t2
  3. C
    t1 = t2
  4. D
    t1 > t2

Correct answer: B

According to Kepler’s law, the areal velocity of a planet around the sun always remains constant.

SCD : A1– t1 (areal velocity constant)
SAB : A2 – t2

A1t1=A2t2{{{A_1}} \over {{t_1}}} = {{{A_2}} \over {{t_2}}}t1A1=t2A2

t1=t2.A1A2{t_1} = {t_2}.{{{A_1}} \over {{A_2}}}t1=t2.A2A1   (given A1 = 2A2)

=t2.2A2A2 = {t_2}.{{2{A_2}} \over {{A_2}}}=t2.A22A2

∴\therefore∴ t1=2t2{t_1} = 2{t_2}t1=2t2
