CH4 + 12{1 \over 2}21​ O2 →\to→ CH3OH

Given that for this reaction, Δ\Delta ΔHr = -ve

CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O,    Δ\Delta ΔH = x ....(1)

CH3OH + 32{3 \over 2}23​ O2 → CO2 + 2H2O,    Δ\Delta ΔH = y ....(2)

Eqn. (1) – Eqn. (2)

CH4 + 12{1 \over 2}21​ O2 →\to→ CH3OH

Δ\Delta ΔHr = x - y = -ve

∴\therefore∴ x < y
