Which of the following carbonyls will have the strongest C −-− O bond?
  1. A
    Mn(CO)6+
  2. B
    Cr(CO)6
  3. C
    V(CO)6−-−
  4. D
    Fe(CO)5
View written solutionFree

Correct answer: A

As + ve charge on the central metal atom increases, the less readily the metal can donate electron density into the π\pi π* orbitals of CO ligand to weaken the C – O bond. Hence, the C – O bond would be strongest in Mn(CO)6+.
