Which stage of meiotic prophase shows terminalisation of chiasmata as its distinctive feature?
  1. A
    Pachytene
  2. B
    Leptotene
  3. C
    Zygotene
  4. D
    Diakinesis
View written solutionFree

Correct answer: D

∙\bullet∙ Diakinesis is the final stage of meiotic prophase 1. In this stage the two homologous chromosomes do not separate completely but remain attached together at one or more points as indicated by ‘X’ arrangement known as chiasmata. The displacement of chiasmata is termed as terminalisation of chiasmata which is completed in diakinesis phase.

∙\bullet∙ Bivalents are formed in zygotene stage and crossing over takes place in pachytene stage.

∙\bullet∙ Compaction of chromosomal material occurs in leptotene stage.
