A ball having kinetic energy KE, is projected at an angle of 60∘60^{\circ}60∘ from the horizontal. What will be the kinetic energy of ball at the highest point of its flight?
  1. A
    (KE)2\frac{(\mathrm{KE})}{2}2(KE)
  2. B
    (KE)8\frac{(\mathrm{KE})}{8}8(KE)
  3. C
    (KE)4\frac{(\mathrm{KE})}{4}4(KE)
  4. D
    (KE)16\frac{(\mathrm{KE})}{16}16(KE)

Correct answer: C

  1. Let the initial speed be uuu.

    The initial kinetic energy is

    KE=12mu2\mathrm{KE}=\frac{1}{2}mu^2KE=21mu2
  2. Resolve the velocity into components.

    Since the ball is projected at 60∘60^\circ60∘,

    ux=ucos⁡60∘=u2,uy=usin⁡60∘=3u2u_x=u\cos 60^\circ=\frac{u}{2}, \qquad u_y=u\sin 60^\circ=\frac{\sqrt{3}u}{2}ux=ucos60∘=2u,uy=usin60∘=23u
  3. Velocity at the highest point.

    At the highest point of projectile motion, the vertical component of velocity becomes zero, while the horizontal component remains unchanged.

    So speed at the highest point is

    v=ux=u2v= u_x = \frac{u}{2}v=ux=2u
  4. Kinetic energy at the highest point.

    KEtop=12m(u2)2=12m⋅u24=18mu2\mathrm{KE}_{\text{top}}=\frac{1}{2}m\left(\frac{u}{2}\right)^2 =\frac{1}{2}m\cdot \frac{u^2}{4} =\frac{1}{8}mu^2KEtop=21m(2u)2=21m⋅4u2=81mu2
  5. Compare with initial kinetic energy.

    Since

    KE=12mu2\mathrm{KE}=\frac{1}{2}mu^2KE=21mu2

    therefore,

    KEtop=18mu2=14(12mu2)=KE4\mathrm{KE}_{\text{top}}=\frac{1}{8}mu^2 = \frac{1}{4}\left(\frac{1}{2}mu^2\right)=\frac{\mathrm{KE}}{4}KEtop=81mu2=41(21mu2)=4KE
  6. Option check.

    • A: KE2\dfrac{\mathrm{KE}}{2}2KE ❌
    • B: KE8\dfrac{\mathrm{KE}}{8}8KE ❌
    • C: KE4\dfrac{\mathrm{KE}}{4}4KE ✅
    • D: KE16\dfrac{\mathrm{KE}}{16}16KE ❌

Hence, the correct answer is Option C.
