In the given figure, a body of mass M is held between two massless springs, on a smooth inclined plane. The free ends of the springs are attached to firm supports. If each spring has spring constant k, the frequency of oscillation of given body is : JEE Main 2021 (Online) 24th February Evening Shift Physics - Simple Harmonic Motion Question 103 English

Correct answer: C

  1. Choose the direction of motion

Let the block move along the smooth incline. Since the plane is smooth, the motion is only along the incline.

  1. Understand the equilibrium position

The component of gravity along the incline is Mgsin⁡αMg\sin\alphaMgsinα which shifts the equilibrium position of the block.

However, frequency of SHM depends on the restoring force about equilibrium, not on the constant force itself.

  1. Restoring force when displaced

Suppose the block is displaced by a small distance xxx along the incline from its equilibrium position.

  • The spring on one side gets compressed/stretched by xxx.
  • The spring on the other side also changes length by xxx in such a way that it exerts a restoring force toward equilibrium.

Each spring contributes a restoring force of magnitude kxkxkx Therefore, total restoring force is F=−kx−kx=−2kxF = -kx-kx = -2kxF=−kx−kx=−2kx

So the effective spring constant is keff=2kk_{\text{eff}}=2kkeff=2k

  1. Equation of motion

Hence, Mx¨=−2kxM\ddot x = -2kxMx¨=−2kx

or x¨+2kMx=0\ddot x + \frac{2k}{M}x=0x¨+M2kx=0

Comparing with standard SHM equation x¨+ω2x=0\ddot x + \omega^2 x=0x¨+ω2x=0 we get ω=2kM\omega = \sqrt{\frac{2k}{M}}ω=M2k

  1. Frequency

Therefore, f=ω2π=12π2kMf=\frac{\omega}{2\pi}=\frac{1}{2\pi}\sqrt{\frac{2k}{M}}f=2πω=2π1M2k

  1. Match with options

This corresponds to:

Option C: 12π2kM\frac{1}{2\pi}\sqrt{\frac{2k}{M}}2π1M2k

  1. Comparison with stored answer

Derived answer = C

Stored correct answer = C

They agree.
