JEE MainPhysicsRotational MotionMCQ+4 / −1
Concrete mixture is made by mixing cement, stone and sand in a rotating cylindrical drum. If the drum rotates too fast, the ingredients remain stuck to the wall of the drum and proper mixing of ingredients does not take place. The maximum rotational speed of the drum in revolutions per minute(rpm) to ensure proper mixing is close to : (Take the radius of the drum to be 1.25 m and its axle to be horizontal) :
  1. A
    0.4
  2. B
    1.3
  3. C
    8.0
  4. D
    27.0

Correct answer: D

  1. Physical condition for proper mixing

If the drum rotates too fast, the concrete sticks to the wall and does not fall down.

For proper mixing, the material should just not remain stuck to the wall at the topmost point.

So, the maximum allowed speed is the speed at which the mixture is just about to lose contact at the top.

At the topmost point, the required centripetal force is provided by:

  • weight mgmgmg
  • normal reaction NNN

For the limiting case of just maintaining contact, N=0N=0N=0 so, mg=mv2rmg = \frac{mv^2}{r}mg=rmv2

Thus, v=grv = \sqrt{gr}v=gr

  1. Relate linear speed to angular speed

Since v=ωrv = \omega rv=ωr we get ω=gr\omega = \sqrt{\frac{g}{r}}ω=rg

Given: r=1.25 m,g≈9.8 m/s2r=1.25\,\text{m}, \quad g\approx 9.8\,\text{m/s}^2r=1.25m,g≈9.8m/s2

So, ω=9.81.25=7.84=2.8 rad/s\omega = \sqrt{\frac{9.8}{1.25}} = \sqrt{7.84} = 2.8\,\text{rad/s}ω=1.259.8=7.84=2.8rad/s

  1. Convert angular speed to revolutions per minute

Frequency in revolutions per second is f=ω2π=2.82πf = \frac{\omega}{2\pi} = \frac{2.8}{2\pi}f=2πω=2π2.8

Using 2π≈6.2832\pi \approx 6.2832π≈6.283, f≈2.86.283≈0.446 rev/sf \approx \frac{2.8}{6.283} \approx 0.446\,\text{rev/s}f≈6.2832.8≈0.446rev/s

Therefore, in rpm: rpm=0.446×60≈26.8\text{rpm} = 0.446 \times 60 \approx 26.8rpm=0.446×60≈26.8

So the maximum rotational speed is close to 27 rpm27\,\text{rpm}27rpm

  1. Check options
  • A: 0.40.40.4 rpm — too small
  • B: 1.31.31.3 rpm — too small
  • C: 8.08.08.0 rpm — too small
  • D: 27.027.027.0 rpm — correct

Hence, the correct option is D.
