Given below are two statements : Statement I : When a capillary tube is dipped into a liquid, the liquid neither rises nor falls in the capillary. The contact angle may be 0∘0^{\circ}0∘. Statement II : The contact angle between a solid and a liquid is a property of the material of the solid and liquid as well. In the light of the above statement, choose the correct answer from the options given below.

  1. Use the capillary rise formula

For a liquid in a capillary tube,

h=2Tcos⁡θρgrh=\frac{2T\cos\theta}{\rho g r}h=ρgr2Tcosθ​

where:

  • TTT = surface tension,
  • θ\thetaθ = contact angle,
  • ρ\rhoρ = density of liquid,
  • rrr = radius of capillary.

If the liquid neither rises nor falls, then

h=0h=0h=0

So we must have

cos⁡θ=0⇒θ=90∘\cos\theta=0 \quad \Rightarrow \quad \theta=90^\circcosθ=0⇒θ=90∘

(not 0∘0^\circ0∘).

Therefore, Statement I is false.

The contact angle depends on the nature of:

  • the solid surface,
  • and also the surrounding medium.

Hence it is indeed a property associated with the material of the solid and liquid.
