As shown in the figure, in an experiment to determine Young's modulus of a wire, the extension-load curve is plotted. The curve is a straight line passing through the origin and makes an angle of 45 ∘^\circ∘ with the load axis. The length of wire is 62.8 cm and its diameter is 4 mm. The Young's modulus is found to be x×104x\times10^4x×104 Nm −2^{-2}−2. The value of xxx is ‾\underline{\hspace{2cm}}​.   1. Young's modulus relation

For a wire,

Y=stressstrain=F/AΔL/L=FLA ΔLY=\frac{\text{stress}}{\text{strain}}=\frac{F/A}{\Delta L/L}=\frac{FL}{A\,\Delta L}Y=strainstress​=ΔL/LF/A​=AΔLFL​

So,

ΔL=FLAY\Delta L=\frac{FL}{AY}ΔL=AYFL​

This means the slope of the extension-load graph is

ΔLF=LAY\frac{\Delta L}{F}=\frac{L}{AY}FΔL​=AYL​

Hence,

Y=LA(ΔLF)Y=\frac{L}{A\left(\frac{\Delta L}{F}\right)}Y=A(FΔL​)L​


  1. Interpret the graph

The graph is of extension vs load and is a straight line through origin making an angle 45∘45^\circ45∘ with the load axis.

Therefore, its slope is

tan⁡45∘=1\tan 45^\circ=1tan45∘=1

So,

ΔLF=1\frac{\Delta L}{F}=1FΔL​=1

(in SI units, i.e. m/N)


  1. Substitute wire dimensions

Given:

  • Length: L=62.8 cm=0.628 mL=62.8\text{ cm}=0.628\text{ m}L=62.8 cm=0.628 m
  • Diameter: d=4 mm=4×10−3 md=4\text{ mm}=4\times10^{-3}\text{ m}d=4 mm=4×10−3 m
  • Radius: r=2×10−3 mr=2\times10^{-3}\text{ m}r=2×10−3 m

Cross-sectional area:

A=πr2=π(2×10−3)2=4π×10−6 m2A=\pi r^2=\pi(2\times10^{-3})^2=4\pi\times10^{-6}\text{ m}^2A=πr2=π(2×10−3)2=4π×10−6 m2


  1. Calculate Young's modulus

Since ΔLF=1\dfrac{\Delta L}{F}=1FΔL​=1,

Y=LAY=\frac{L}{A}Y=AL​

Thus,

Y=0.6284π×10−6Y=\frac{0.628}{4\pi\times10^{-6}}Y=4π×10−60.628​

Using π≈3.14\pi\approx 3.14π≈3.14,
