A person can throw a ball upto a maximum range of 100 m. How high above the ground he can throw the same ball?
  1. A
    25 m
  2. B
    50 m
  3. C
    100 m
  4. D
    200 m

Correct answer: B

  1. Use the formula for maximum horizontal range

For a projectile thrown with speed uuu, the horizontal range is

R=u2sin⁡2θgR = \frac{u^2 \sin 2\theta}{g}R=gu2sin2θ

The maximum range occurs when

θ=45∘\theta = 45^\circθ=45∘

so

Rmax⁡=u2gR_{\max} = \frac{u^2}{g}Rmax=gu2

Given:

Rmax⁡=100 mR_{\max} = 100\ \text{m}Rmax=100 m

Hence,

u2g=100\frac{u^2}{g} = 100gu2=100

So,

u2=100gu^2 = 100gu2=100g

  1. Now find the maximum height the person can throw

To throw the ball to the greatest height above the ground, it should be thrown vertically upward with the same speed uuu.

The maximum height reached is

H=u22gH = \frac{u^2}{2g}H=2gu2

Substitute u2=100gu^2 = 100gu2=100g:

H=100g2g=50 mH = \frac{100g}{2g} = 50\ \text{m}H=2g100g=50 m

  1. Check options
  • A: 25 m25\ \text{m}25 m
  • B: 50 m50\ \text{m}50 m ✅
  • C: 100 m100\ \text{m}100 m
  • D: 200 m200\ \text{m}200 m

Therefore, the correct answer is:

50 m\boxed{50\ \text{m}}50 m

So, Option B is correct.
