A proton and an alpha particle of the same velocity enter in a uniform magnetic field which is acting perpendicular to their direction of motion. The ratio of the radii of the circular paths described by the alpha particle and proton is :
  1. A
    1 : 4
  2. B
    4 : 1
  3. C
    2 : 1
  4. D
    1 : 2

Correct answer: C

  1. Use the formula for radius in a magnetic field

When a charged particle enters a uniform magnetic field perpendicular to its velocity, it moves in a circular path of radius

r=mvqBr = \frac{mv}{qB}r=qBmv

where:

  • mmm = mass of particle
  • vvv = speed
  • qqq = charge
  • BBB = magnetic field
  1. Given condition

The proton and alpha particle have the same velocity and move in the same magnetic field, so from

r∝mqr \propto \frac{m}{q}r∝qm

  1. For proton
  • Mass of proton =mp= m_p=mp
  • Charge of proton =+e= +e=+e

So,

rp∝mper_p \propto \frac{m_p}{e}rp∝emp

  1. For alpha particle

An alpha particle has:

  • Mass =4mp= 4m_p=4mp
  • Charge =+2e= +2e=+2e

So,

rα∝4mp2e=2mper_\alpha \propto \frac{4m_p}{2e} = \frac{2m_p}{e}rα∝2e4mp=e2mp

  1. Find the ratio

rαrp=2mpempe=2\frac{r_\alpha}{r_p} = \frac{\frac{2m_p}{e}}{\frac{m_p}{e}} = 2rprα=empe2mp=2

Hence,

rα:rp=2:1r_\alpha : r_p = 2:1rα:rp=2:1

  1. Match with options

The correct option is C: 2:12:12:1.
