The current sensitivity of a galvanometer can be increased by : (A) decreasing the number of turns (B) increasing the magnetic field (C) decreasing the area of the coil (D) decreasing the torsional constant of the spring Choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
  1. A
    (B) and (C) only
  2. B
    (C) and (D) only
  3. C

Correct answer: D

  1. Current sensitivity of a galvanometer

For a moving coil galvanometer,

deflecting torque=nBIA\text{deflecting torque} = n B I Adeflecting torque=nBIA

and restoring torque is

CθC\thetaCθ

At equilibrium,

nBIA=CθnBIA = C\thetanBIA=Cθ

So,

θI=nBAC\frac{\theta}{I} = \frac{nBA}{C}Iθ=CnBA

Current sensitivity is

SI=θI=nBACS_I = \frac{\theta}{I} = \frac{nBA}{C}SI=Iθ=CnBA

Thus, current sensitivity increases when:

  • nnn increases
  • BBB increases
  • AAA increases
  • CCC decreases

  1. Check each statement
  • (A) decreasing the number of turns

    Since sensitivity is proportional to nnn, decreasing nnn will decrease sensitivity. So this is false.

  • (B) increasing the magnetic field

    Since sensitivity is proportional to BBB, increasing BBB will increase sensitivity. So this is true.

  • (C) decreasing the area of the coil

    Since sensitivity is proportional to AAA, decreasing AAA will decrease sensitivity. So this is false.

  • (D) decreasing the torsional constant of the spring

    Since sensitivity is inversely proportional to CCC, decreasing CCC will increase sensitivity. So this is true.

  1. Correct combination

The correct statements are:

(B) and (D)(B) \text{ and } (D)(B) and (D)

So the correct option is:

D\boxed{\text{D}}D
  1. Comparison with stored answer

Stored correct answer: D\boxed{D}D

My derived answer also: D\boxed{D}D

Hence, they agree.
