JEE MainPhysicsMagnetic Properties of MatterMCQ+4 / −1
The relationship between the magnetic susceptibility (x)(x)(x) and the magnetic permeability (μ)(\mu)(μ) is given by : (μ0\mu_0μ0 is the permeability of free space and μT\mu_TμT is relative permeability)
  1. A
    X=μμ0−1X=\frac{\mu}{\mu_0}-1X=μ0μ−1
  2. B
    X=μrμ0+1X=\frac{\mu_{\mathrm{r}}}{\mu_0}+1X=μ0μr+1
  3. C
    χ=μr+1\chi=\mu_r+1χ=μr+1
  4. D
    X=1−μμ0X=1-\frac{\mu}{\mu_0}X=1−μ0μ

Correct answer: A

  1. Use the standard relation between B\mathbf{B}B and H\mathbf{H}H

    For a magnetic material, B=μHB=\mu HB=μH and also, B=μ0(1+χ)HB=\mu_0(1+\chi)HB=μ0(1+χ)H

    where:

    • μ\muμ = magnetic permeability of the material
    • μ0\mu_0μ0 = permeability of free space
    • χ\chiχ = magnetic susceptibility
  2. Compare the two expressions

    Since both represent BBB, μH=μ0(1+χ)H\mu H=\mu_0(1+\chi)HμH=μ0(1+χ)H

    Cancelling HHH, μ=μ0(1+χ)\mu=\mu_0(1+\chi)μ=μ0(1+χ)

  3. Solve for susceptibility

    1+χ=μμ01+\chi=\frac{\mu}{\mu_0}1+χ=μ0μ χ=μμ0−1\chi=\frac{\mu}{\mu_0}-1χ=μ0μ−1

  4. Using relative permeability

    Since μr=μμ0\mu_r=\frac{\mu}{\mu_0}μr=μ0μ we can also write χ=μr−1\chi=\mu_r-1χ=μr−1

  5. Check options

    • A: X=μμ0−1X=\dfrac{\mu}{\mu_0}-1X=μ0μ−1 ✅ Correct
    • B: X=μrμ0+1X=\dfrac{\mu_r}{\mu_0}+1X=μ0μr+1 ❌ Incorrect; dimensions and relation are wrong
    • C: χ=μr+1\chi=\mu_r+1χ=μr+1 ❌ Incorrect; correct relation is χ=μr−1\chi=\mu_r-1χ=μr−1
    • D: X=1−μμ0X=1-\dfrac{\mu}{\mu_0}X=1−μ0μ ❌ Incorrect sign

Therefore, the correct option is A.
