JEE MainPhysicsLaws of MotionNumerical+4 / −1
Two forces F‾1\overline{\mathrm{F}}_1F1 and F‾2\overline{\mathrm{F}}_2F2 are acting on a body. One force has magnitude thrice that of the other force and the resultant of the two forces is equal to the force of larger magnitude. The angle between F⃗1\vec{F}_1F1 and F⃗2\vec{F}_2F2 is cos⁡−1(1n)\cos ^{-1}\left(\frac{1}{n}\right)cos−1(n1). The value of ∣n∣|n|∣n∣ is ‾\underline{\hspace{2cm}}.

Correct answer: 6

  1. Let the smaller force be FFF. Then the larger force is 3F3F3F.

  2. If the angle between the two forces is θ\thetaθ, then the magnitude of the resultant is R=F2+(3F)2+2(F)(3F)cos⁡θR=\sqrt{F^2+(3F)^2+2(F)(3F)\cos\theta}R=F2+(3F)2+2(F)(3F)cosθ R=10F2+6F2cos⁡θR=\sqrt{10F^2+6F^2\cos\theta}R=10F2+6F2cosθ

  3. Given that the resultant is equal to the larger force, so R=3FR=3FR=3F

  4. Squaring both sides: 10F2+6F2cos⁡θ=9F210F^2+6F^2\cos\theta=9F^210F2+6F2cosθ=9F2

  5. Divide by F2F^2F2: 10+6cos⁡θ=910+6\cos\theta=910+6cosθ=9 6cos⁡θ=−16\cos\theta=-16cosθ=−1 cos⁡θ=−16\cos\theta=-\frac{1}{6}cosθ=−61

  6. The angle is given as θ=cos⁡−1(1n)\theta=\cos^{-1}\left(\frac{1}{n}\right)θ=cos−1(n1) so 1n=−16\frac{1}{n}=-\frac{1}{6}n1=−61 n=−6n=-6n=−6

  7. Therefore, ∣n∣=6|n|=6∣n∣=6
