Same gas is filled in two vessels of the same volume at the same temperature. If the ratio of the number of molecules is 1:41: 41:4, then A. The r.m.s. velocity of gas molecules in two vessels will be the same. B. The ratio of pressure in these vessels will be 1:41: 41:4. C. The ratio of pressure will be 1:11: 11:1. D. The r.m.s. velocity of gas molecules in two vessels will be in the ratio of 1:41: 41:4. Choose the correct answer from the options given below :
  1. A
    A and C only
  2. B
    B and D only
  3. C

Correct answer: C

  1. Use the ideal gas law in molecular form

    For a gas, PV=NkTPV = NkTPV=NkT where:

    • PPP = pressure
    • VVV = volume
    • NNN = number of molecules
    • kkk = Boltzmann constant
    • TTT = temperature
  2. Given conditions

    • Same gas in both vessels
    • Same volume: V1=V2V_1 = V_2V1=V2
    • Same temperature: T1=T2T_1 = T_2T1=T2
    • Number of molecules ratio: N1:N2=1:4N_1:N_2 = 1:4N1:N2=1:4
  3. Compare pressures

    From P=NkTVP = \frac{NkT}{V}P=VNkT since kkk, TTT, and VVV are same for both vessels, P∝NP \propto NP∝N Therefore, P1:P2=N1:N2=1:4P_1:P_2 = N_1:N_2 = 1:4P1:P2=N1:N2=1:4

So statement B is true and statement C is false.

  4. Compare r.m.s. speeds

    The r.m.s. speed of gas molecules is vrms=3kTm=3RTMv_{\mathrm{rms}} = \sqrt{\frac{3kT}{m}} = \sqrt{\frac{3RT}{M}}vrms=m3kT=M3RT

Since both vessels contain the same gas and are at the same temperature, mmm and TTT are same in both cases.

    Hence, vrms,1=vrms,2v_{\mathrm{rms,1}} = v_{\mathrm{rms,2}}vrms,1=vrms,2

So statement A is true and statement D is false.

  5. Identify correct combination

True statements: A and B only.

Therefore, the correct option is: C\boxed{\text{C}}C

  6. Comparison with stored answer

    Stored correct answer: C

My derived answer is also C, so they agree.
