Assuming the earth to be a sphere of uniform mass density, a body weighed 300 N300 \mathrm{~N}300 N on the surface of earth. How much it would weigh at R/4 depth under surface of earth ?
  1. A
    75 N
  2. B
    375 N
  3. C
    300 N
  4. D
    225 N

Correct answer: D

  1. Given:

    • Weight on the surface of Earth: W=300 NW = 300\,\text{N}W=300N
    • Depth below surface: d=R4d = \dfrac{R}{4}d=4R
  2. Gravity inside a uniform spherical Earth:

For a point at depth ddd below the surface, the acceleration due to gravity becomes gd=g(1−dR)g_d = g\left(1 - \frac{d}{R}\right)gd=g(1−Rd) where RRR is the radius of Earth.

  3. Substitute d=R4d = \dfrac{R}{4}d=4R: gd=g(1−14)=g(34)g_d = g\left(1 - \frac{1}{4}\right) = g\left(\frac{3}{4}\right)gd=g(1−41)=g(43)

  4. Weight at that depth: Since weight is proportional to ggg, Wd=W(gdg)=300×34W_d = W\left(\frac{g_d}{g}\right) = 300 \times \frac{3}{4}Wd=W(ggd)=300×43 Wd=225 NW_d = 225\,\text{N}Wd=225N

  5. Option check:

    • A: 75 N75\,\text{N}75N ❌
    • B: 375 N375\,\text{N}375N ❌
    • C: 300 N300\,\text{N}300N ❌
    • D: 225 N225\,\text{N}225N ✅

Therefore, the body would weigh 225 N225\,\text{N}225N at depth R/4R/4R/4 under the surface.
