Two satellite A and B go round a planet in circular orbits having radii 4R and R respectively. If the speed of A\mathrm{A}A is 3v3 v3v, the speed of B\mathrm{B}B will be :
  1. A
    6v6 v6v
  2. B
    43v\frac{4}{3} v34v
  3. C
    3v3 v3v
  4. D
    12v12 v12v

Correct answer: A

  1. Use the orbital speed formula

For a satellite moving in a circular orbit of radius rrr around a planet,

v=GMrv = \sqrt{\frac{GM}{r}}v=rGM

where GGG is the gravitational constant and MMM is the mass of the planet.

So, orbital speed is inversely proportional to the square root of radius:

v∝1rv \propto \frac{1}{\sqrt{r}}v∝r1

  1. Write the given radii
  • Satellite AAA has orbit radius 4R4R4R
  • Satellite BBB has orbit radius RRR

Thus,

vBvA=rArB=4RR=4=2\frac{v_B}{v_A} = \sqrt{\frac{r_A}{r_B}} = \sqrt{\frac{4R}{R}} = \sqrt{4} = 2vAvB=rBrA=R4R=4=2

  1. Use the given speed of satellite A

Given:

vA=3vv_A = 3vvA=3v

Therefore,

vB=2vA=2(3v)=6vv_B = 2v_A = 2(3v) = 6vvB=2vA=2(3v)=6v

  1. Match with the options

The correct option is:

6v\boxed{6v}6v

So, Option A is correct.
